How to Leave Your Job In Style

Would you like a fresh challenge?

Are you keen to find a new role with promotion potential?

Maybe you’d simply like a more local job?

Let’s talk! Stevenage-based employment agency Essential Results can help you find your exciting new job. But what’s the best way to leave your current position?

Here are our top tips on how to resign with poise and professionalism…

  1. Ask yourself…

Are you resigning because of overall discontent with your role? Or could it be specific issue that’s making you consider changing jobs? Pinpointing problem areas gives you the opportunity to resolve situations – drastic action such as resigning could be just one option. Think of the bigger picture!

  1. Make a list…

Listing the advantages and disadvantages of your current job will help you feel sure that resigning is the right decision for you.

  1. Giving notice…

Before committing to starting a new job, be sure of the notice period that you are obliged to work. This means that you can start your new role as planned whilst respecting your obligation to your current employer. You should also look into the time period involved with returning any company property such as phone, car or technology.

  1. Resigning…

The formal way to resign is to write a resignation letter – however it is recommended that you tell your supervisor in person. Above, all be positive. Your resignation letter should be professional and should simply state that you’re leaving your current role. If appropriate, you can also state how positive your experience of working with the company has been. Remember – you may be asked to attend an exit interview.

  1. Recommendations…

Asking your employer for a letter of recommendation – or a recommendation on LinkedIn – will help you to document your credentials for future opportunities.

  1. Telling colleagues…

Your colleagues will be keen to know what’s going on. Be sure to issue your formal resignation letter before spilling the beans!

  1. Positivity…

Your resignation period is not the time for utter honesty regardless of your feelings about your role… the people your work with… or the company itself. Stay positive and professional, avoiding burning any bridges with colleagues and managers. You never know when you may meet people again!
